My name is Robin Sanders and I work at CBS News. I'm writing to let you know about a story on autism that will be running on 60 MINUTES this coming Sunday (Feb. 18, 7PM ET/PT).You will find a short write-up below, but in brief, the piece focuses on whether early diagnosis and treatment can make a difference in children with autism. We are hoping to get word out to as many people with a special interest in this subject as possible, so we would be grateful if you would consider sending out an email to your listserve and/or posting something on your website. People can also check out our website at: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/1998/07/08/60minutes/main13502.shtml for further information; video and a text version of the story will be posted there as well after it airs. Feel free to link to our website from yours. And if you have any links that your think might be helpful to our viewers, please send them to me to pass along to our web folk for possible inclusion on the page. DIAGNOSIS: AUTISM The U.S. government recently announced that autism now occurs in about 1 of every 150 American children. Yet this brain disorder, which cripples the ability of a person to relate to the world around them, remains a baffling mystery. It's also become a raging controversy, with parent groups arguing with scientists over what causes it, and with politicians over funding for research. Now, in one potentially exciting development, researchers at the University of California's MIND Institute in Davis believe that if they can accurately diagnose children early, they might actually be able to intervene and change the way a child's brain develops. 60 MINUTES will take a closer look at the subject in this week's show (Sunday, Feb. 18, 7PM ET/PT on CBS). I FORGOT....... Tomorrow night there is also an autism thing on extreme makeover house edition. They are giving a family with 5 autistic children a new home!!! | | |
